Day 2 - First day of school pics!

First I would like to say a big THANK YOU to all my bloggy friends who commented on my last post, as well as those of you that commented on Face Book. I love how I can write something, such as my concerns/fears about glasses for Ella and feel so stupid for feeling those things, and within 24 hours feel so much better about it. It is always nice to know that you aren't the only one that has those thoughts......that you are not alone!!! After tallying up the votes and really listening to what you guys said, especially you RK, we are going with the 1st pair and they will be "shiny pink" in color!! Thank you guys so much!

So, like I said in my last post, I am way behind in blogging. The first day of school for the kids this year was Wednesday September 8th. That morning at 6am I left on an airplane headed to Atlanta to attend a DownsEd Conference (which was AMAZING and I will post about that later.) I do NOT leave my children. I have spent two nights away from Ella, one when I had surgery, Ella was about 7 months old, and my mom flew down to Texas to keep her and once this past December when the kids both spent the night at my moms. I just don't do it. Sure Hunter has sleepovers at Nana and Grandpa's house but that is about it. Anyhow, I convinced myself that it was okay to go out of town for 5 days and attend this conference. After I bought the ticket and everything was paid for I find out that the first day of school will be on the Wednesday after Labor Day instead of the Tuesday like it was last year. I was so upset that I was going to miss the first day of school. I totally cried.

Hunter started a new school this year. Last year he was at a Kindergarten Center, a school with only Kindergartners and this year he started the actual elementary school. Overall I didn't have too many worries with Hunter. He is a smart boy, very social and loves school. BUT, Hunter has some anxiety issues and is pretty sensitive so I didn't really know how he would take me not being here. Then there is Ella. Ella thrives on routine. Starting school obviously is a change and this year we opted for morning preschool rather than afternoon and as I mentioned I do not spend nights away from Ella. I was afraid that she wouldn't understand that I am just gone for a few days but that I am coming back. School itself I was so NOT worried about, Ella has the same teachers this year and they are FABULOUS, seriously I love them!!! Anyhow, as usual my kids proved me wrong and really I don't think they missed me one bit and daddy did a wonderful job taking over my duties!!! I made Chris and my mom swear to take lots of pictures of the kids before they headed off for the 1st day and they did a great job!! Here are the pics that were waiting for me when I got back!!!

Apparently Ella thought it was funny face time

My beautiful 1st grade boy!

Here he is with the note I left him, wearing it on his shirt. He is sentimental like that : )

31 for 21 blog challenge Day 1

Well, it's that time of year again. October is Down syndrome Awareness month and if you read my blog you are AWARE of why this is a special month to me : ) The idea behind this 31 for 21 is that participants will blog each of the 31 days of October to raise awareness of Ds - hence the 21 for Trisomy 21. Got it? I have failed miserably in past years so hopefully I can get my act together this October and stick with it. I don't know how many of my posts will be insightful, most I'm sure will be pictures and probably summer flashbacks (because I was a horrible blogger this summer and I have tons of cute pics to post.)

I will kick this thing off by asking for help......

Yesterday I took Ella to the eye doctor. I was told when Ella was born, "MOST children with Down syndrome need glasses," and you need to keep her vision closely monitored. (I hate generalizations and perhaps that is why I'm not liking this.) Ella, this past year or so, has been going to the eye doctor every 3 months. I love her doctor. He is not quick to put kids in glasses, likes the wait and see approach, which I like. Anyhow, today he informed us that Ella needs glasses. Apparently since we were last there in June Ella's eyes have changed quite a bit, well that and she was actually cooperative today and he got a really good look at her eyes. She is farsighted, has an astigmatism, and one of her eyes is crossing and the muscle is breaking down, so glasses it is. I am thrilled *insert heavy sarcasm*!!! That child fights me over EVERYTHING, I do not think this is going to be pleasant for either of us.

We went to the optical shop and tried on, against Ella's will, several pairs of glasses. I have to say that I did not care for the glasses that most kiddos with Ds are getting these days, they really just looked awkward on Ella's face to me. The lens part of them barely went past her actual eyes and they looked too small to me. The shop let me bring home 6 pairs of frames to try on again, my guess is because Ella was being a pain, a BIG pain in the shop and they wanted us to hurry up and leave. (not really they were super nice, but still.)

I thought I would be way more upset when this day came, and really I kind of figured it was coming. I don't know what it is. Part of it is that it is just one more thing to deal with. Part of it is something more for her to get picked on for? Part of it is vanity on my part, she is such a beautiful girl and I don't want to cover up her face. Part of it is money, they are not cheap! BUT, after the doctor explained to me the issues that Ella is having I of course want her to have every advantage and obviously vision is so important. So here we go!!

So I've narrowed it down to 3, 2 really, but here are pictures of Ella in the top 3 pairs. Keep in mind that none of these have been adjusted at all, they are straight off the rack and that Ella has been crying, throwing a fit, and her eyes have been dilated so she looks like a mess! What do YOU think???

Pair 1, If I get these we will order them in pink

Buddy Walk 2010

Yesterday was the Buddy Walk in Coeur d'Alene, ID put on by our Ds Connecitons group. We started out the morning by heading downtown to appear on the news with our friends the Kibbe's to promote our group and the walk, and that went pretty well! Then off to the walk! The weather was beautiful, the turn out was great, and everyone had a lot of fun. This was our first Buddy Walk and we are looking forward to our next!!!

I am so thankful to team Ella Grace with the Pretty Face! As I looked at the picture below I realized that, with the exception of my mom, Chris and Hunter, I would not know a single one of these people if I didn't have Ella. It's quite amazing when you think about it. Thank you so much to everyone that came out and walked with us, it meant so much!!!
